On November 18, 2001, just two months after the tragic events of September 11, I visited Ground Zero.

I remember calling my Mom and Dad from Battery Park within view of the Statue of Liberty and remarking about how this had to be the most solemn place on the face of the Earth.  There were thousands of makeshift memorials and my meager attempts to capture them undoubtedly fell short.

But one that really stuck out to me was this photograph of a spontaneous laminated memorial to the flight crews of United Airlines Flights 93 & 175.

Flight crews from airlines around the world—including Lufthansa, TWA, Delta, and Air France—had traveled to the site to leave their handwritten signatures and messages of comfort alongside the printed portraits of their fallen brothers and sisters.

This page is dedicated to preserving those names, those faces, and that undeniable spirit of unity so that the world will never forget.

Notable Handwritten Tributes & Details

Around the margins, visiting crews from other airlines left direct, heartfelt messages written in different colored sharpies:

Top Right (Red): “Our thoughts are with you – Lufthansa Airlines”

Top Center (Black script): “With all our hearts we are with you. TWA Crew”

Left Edge (Blue block letters): “DELTA AIRLINES WILL NOT FORGET YOU”

Center Column (Green script): “AER LINGUS” written right next to the portraits of the flight attendants.

Bottom Edge (Bold black marker): “GOD BLESS” and “AIR FRANCE” written in red below it.

Scattered Notes: Throughout the white space, visitors added signatures, flight numbers, or dates, including messages like “Our prayers are with you” and “God Speed.”
